Fani Willis announces arrest warrants for Trump and 18 co-defendants with deadline to turn themselves in

Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis announced that arrest warrants have been issued for Donald Trump and his 18 co-defendants and gave them a strict deadline to turn themselves in.

The Fulton County district attorney made the announcement after a grand jury handed up 13 felony charges against Mr Trump for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state.

These charges include RICO, conspiracy to commit forgery, filing false documents, Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer and more.

In addition, 18 Trump associates have also been indicted, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.

“Subsequent to the indictment, as is the normal process in Georgia law, the grand jury issues arrest warrants for those who were charged,” she told reporters on Monday night. “I am giving the defendants the opportunity to voluntarily surrender no later than noon on Friday the 25th day of August 2023.”

Ms Willis, who has been mocked by the former president in the build-up to his fourth indictment, described what she had investigated as “a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of 2020 presidential election in this state.”

She then stated that the defendants had the “illegal goal of allowing Donald J Trump to seize the presidential term of office beginning on January 20 2021.”

And she added: “All elections in our nation are administered by the states which are given the responsibility of ensuring a fair process and an accurate counting of the votes….the states’ role in this process is essential to the functioning of our democracy.”

She then said that Georgia had a legal process for anyone who wanted to challenge election results to do so in courts in the state.

“The indictment alleges that rather than abide by Georgia’s legal process for election challenges the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia’s presidential election result.”

Ms Willis said that she is seeking a trial date in the case “within the next six months.”

“This office will be submitting a proposed scheduling order within this week. However, that will totally be at the discretion of the judge,” Ms Willis said.

And she added that she wanted to try all of the 19 defendants together in the case.

New Zealand have won a second nail-biting Test in a row with an amazing victory over Sri Lanka on the final ball of the match in Christchurch.

After beating England two weeks ago by a solitary run, the Black Caps have held on to record a nail-biting two-wicket win after Kane Williamson stroked a superb century on the final day.

Sri Lanka needed to win both Tests to earn a place in the final of the World Test Championship but India have now qualified regardless of the outcome of their fourth Test against Australia.

Rain delayed the start of play on the last day. New Zealand resumed at 1-28, needing a further 257 runs to win and lead the two-match series, after the first session was washed out.

Tom Latham went early for 28 and Henry Nicholls made just 20 at the home side slumped to 3-92.

Williamson found a willing ally in Daryl Mitchell, who thumped three fours and four sixes in his 81 from just 86 balls as they shared a 142-run partnership in 26 overs.

A 14th century from Angelo Matthews dragged the tourists right back into the contest at Hagley Oval on day four. He scored a defiant 115 and shared partnerships of 105 with Dinesh Chandimal (42) and 60 with Dhananjaya de Silva (47 not out) to help extend Sri Lanka’s lead from 65 runs overnight to 284 when they were dismissed for 302.

Sri Lanka has identified 2023 as the year of reconciliation, recovery and national unity, Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane says.

She made this remark at the event to hoist the Commonwealth National Flag for Peace by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya, on the occasion of Commonwealth Day today (March 13).

The event was attended by the officials of the Foreign Ministry, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s commitment to the shared values and principles of the Commonwealth.

Hoisting of the Commonwealth of Nations Flag for Peace by member states as a collective commitment to peace is an initiative launched by the Commonwealth Secretariat in line with this year’s theme “Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Common Future”.

This year’s Commonwealth Day marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter.

State Minister Balasuriya in his speech, stated that Sri Lanka, a founding member of the Commonwealth, welcomes the initiative and expressed his appreciation to the organization for its efforts in promoting peace and prosperity world-wide.

Delivering introductory remarks, Foreign Secretary Wijewardane highlighted the relevance of the initiative for Sri Lanka, which had suffered years of conflict, and that Sri Lanka has identified the year 2023 as the year of reconciliation, recovery and national unity.
